Programming Policy

Thank you for your interest in presenting or performing at the West Milford Township Library! Please read through the following policy and complete the application at the bottom of this page.

The West Milford Township Library supports its mission of being the community’s intellectual and cultural center, and thereby providing lifelong learning and resources that inform, inspire, entertain, and enrich the entire community. Offering events, classes, clubs, and various other forms of programming is an integral component of library service that:

  • Supports and defines the library’s role as a community center
  • Gives all community members access to library materials
  • Provides entertainment
  • Provides opportunities for lifelong learning
  • Expands the versatility and visibility of the library

Responsibility for programming at the library rests with the Library Director, who administers under the authority of the Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director, in turn, delegates the authority for program management to the Adult, Teen, and Children’s Services Librarians.

At the West Milford Township Library, we utilize staff expertise, collections, services, and our facilities in developing and delivering programming. The library uses the following criteria in making decisions about program topics, presenters and/or performers:

  • Relevance to community needs and interests
  • Connection to other community programs or events
  • Availability of space
  • Treatment of content for intended audience
  • Presentation quality
  • Presenter background/qualifications in content area
  • Budget
  • Educational, cultural, and/or entertainment significance
  • Relation to library collections, resources, exhibits, and/or other programs

The library partners with other educational and cultural institutions and organizations, as well as individuals, to present co-sponsored public programs. Professional performers and presenters that reflect specialized expertise can be hired for library programs; performers and presenters will not be excluded from consideration because of their origin, background, or views. Library staff who present programs do so as part of their regular job and are not hired as outside contractors for programming.

All library programs are open to the public, unless otherwise noted. Library sponsorship of a program does not constitute an endorsement of the content of the program or the views expressed by the performer, presenter, or participants.

Registration is required for planning and space purposes. Programs may be held on site at the library, or off-site. Programming is not used for commercial, religious, political, or partisan purposes, or for the solicitation of business.

Performers, and/or presenters are non-contractual. The Director, who administers under the authority of the Library Board of Trustees, reserves the right to cancel a program, event, class, or club at any time.
