Summer vacation has begun for the southern California Torres-Thompson family; however, finances have forced parents Maureen and Scott to make difficult lifestyle changes. Consequences quickly unfold for the Torres-Thompson children, as well as for their live-in housekeeper Araceli Ramirez in Héctor Tobar's contemporary novel.
