Summer Events for Children

This year the summer reading theme is Build a Better World! In the children’s room we hope to connect you to your community and friends through one of our many programs! Please note where *registration is required. To register stop by the Library or call the Children’s Services desk @ 973-728-2823. All programs are free. Enjoy!

July

Monday, July 17Peace Project  All Day Event/Continuing Activity/All Ages – Children’s Room

Be a part of our Peace Project by coloring a peace sign to be displayed in the Children’s Room. Then, we ask you share the peace – take a peace sign and give it to someone you know, ask them to color it and bring it back to the Children’s Room! Then we’ll ask them to do the same, thus sharing the peace within our community!

 

Tuesday, July 18Building Blocks  3 Sessions: Session 1 @ 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. or Session 2 @ 2:30 – 4 p.m. or Session 3 @ 6 – 7:30 p.m. – Children’s Room

Stop in the Children’s Room during one of our sessions times listed above and build with the family! There will be blocks or Lego bricks for all ages to use, from our babies to our big kids!

 

Wednesday, July 19Family Game Night  6 – 7:30 p.m. – Children’s Room

Come out to the Library for Family Game Night and play classic games like Uno, Sorry, Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land and Chess or Checkers.

 

Thursday, July 20Sciencetellers: Pirates Lost at Sea 3:00 p.m./Ages 4 and up; families welcome – Meeting Rooms 6&7 – *Registration Required

Ahoy! Set sail with us on a thrilling action-packed adventure about a crew of quirky pirates marooned on a desert island. With mutiny and high-tide looming, they must rescue their salty captain and find a way to build a new ship before all hope is lost … at sea!

Throughout the story, volunteers from the audience will help explore the incredible science behind clouds, combustion, air pressure and more. Do not miss this refreshing nautical tale with a twist!

Create a Perler bead craft of your own design, or follow one of our patterns!

Join Miss Lauren for a morning of froggy fun! There will be stories, songs, and activities for our littlest tadpoles!

 

Wednesday, July 26Stamping Fun!  3 Sessions: Session 1 @ 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. or Session 2 @ 2:30 – 4 p.m. or Session 3 @ 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Stop in the Children’s Room during one of our sessions times listed above for some stamping fun! We have stamps for all ages to chose from, even the little ones!

 

Thursday, July 27Eyes of the Wild: A Better World Naturally 3:00 – 4:00 p.m./Ages 3 and up; families welcome – Meeting Room 6&7 – *Registration Required

Join Eyes of the Wild and their amazing rescued animals! This program will discuss ways in which animals help build a better world, and success stories of how we are working toward a future that can include every living thing!

 

Saturday, July 29Friendship Bracelets – 3:00 p.m./Ages 6 and up – Children’s Room

Stop in the Children’s Room to learn how to make a basic friendship bracelet. Make one for a friend, or bring friends along and do a friendship bracelet exchange!

 

Monday, July 31 Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Party – 6:00 – 7:30 p.m./Ages 7-14 – Children’s Room – *Registration Required 

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the publishing of Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone and we’re celebrating with potions, crafts, and do-it-yourself treats! Come as a witch, wizard, or muggle…the choice is yours!

Take the domino challenge to see how long a track you can build, and how fast the dominoes fall!

 

Wednesday, August 2 Sand Art –  3 Sessions: Session 1 @ 11:00 a.m. or Session 2 @ 3:30 p.m. or  Session 3 @ 6:30 p.m./Ages 3 and up – Children’s Room – *Registration Required 

Don’t worry be happy! Fill a smiley face necklace with a rainbow of color sand and wear your smile with pride!

 

Thursday, August 3 Art Kids: Visions of Peace – 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m./Ages 6 and up – Children’s Room *Registration Required 

Learn about different symbols from around the world that stand for peace, and create an original artwork design using peace as a theme.

 

Monday, August 7 Book Bingo – 11:00 a.m./Ages 2 and up – Children’s Room

Stop in with the little ones for a friendly game of book bingo with some of your favorite characters!

Join us for an evening of straight across, up & down, diagonal, full cards, and all the things you love about a traditional bingo game…including prizes!

Join Miss Lauren for a morning of stories, songs, and activities for the little ones while we celebrate the sunshine in these wonderful hazy, lazy, crazy…dog days of summer!

 

Wednesday, August 9Battle-Bots 2 Sessions: Session 1 @ 4:00 p.m. or Session 2 @ 5:00 p.m. /Ages 7 and up – Meeting Rooms 6&7 – *Registration Required

Construct a Battle-Bot from Robotix modular pieces and participate in a robot tug-o’ war!

 

Thursday, August 10 Art Kids: Build a Better World – BIG EVENT! – 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. /Ages 6 and up – Children’s Room *Registration Required 

Students will learn all about Engineering, Architecture and the 7 Wonders of the World during this special workshop designed for the summer reading theme! Students will get to design, build and test an earthquake proof building, create a House of Cards and design simple machines.

 

Friday, August 11 The Magic of Sharks! – 3:00 – 4:00 p.m./All Ages – Children’s Room *Registration Required 

Help magician Steve Woyce make the magic happen while learning amazing shark facts during this high-energy comedy magic show!

 

Monday, August 14Marshmallow Structures – 6:00 -7:30 p.m./Ages 5 and up – Children’s Room *Registration Required 

Let’s see who can build the strongest tower using marshmallows and a variety of objects to connect them.

 

Wednesday, August 16Ice cream Bookmarks – 6:00 -7:30 p.m./Ages 5 and up – Children’s Room

Hold your space with a corner bookmark that looks just like an ice cream cone! It’s fun to make and looks delicious!
